Baby Rabbit Care At 9 Days Old

Baby Rabbit Care Just Before The Eyes Open

When the kits are nine days old, it is time to change the nest box material.  The kits will begin opening their eyes on day ten.  You want to minimize the chance that the kits will develop eye infections.  So you want a clean nest box.

If the weather is very cold, you will want to save as much of the cleaner fur (usually that on top of the kits) and discard the rest.   Occasionally a dam will pull more fur after you clean the box, but more often, she will not.

I replace the paper (in the winter) and the hay and then line an indentation in the hay with the  reserved fur.  Next, I replace the nest box into the cage.

I try to keep an eye on the nest box for the next several hours.  It seems to me that in trying to get settled into the cleaned nest box, a number of kits have gotten out of the box and chilled and died.  I consider the ninth day to be one of the critical times that I might lose kits (along with kindling and weaning).
